Ignatian Adventure

Pause. Breathe.

Notice where God is meeting

you right now.

Life moves fast. Between the demands of work, relationships, and daily responsibilities, it is easy to find your inner life feeling rushed, dry, or running on autopilot. You do not need another checklist or a heavier religious routine.

You need space to exhale. You need gentle guidance to help you notice the quiet, persistent ways the Divine is already moving in your everyday life.

Starting this September, step away from the noise and into a guided journey of deep reflection, compassionate community, and inner freedom.

Introducing: The Ignatian Adventure Cohort

A 32-Week Guided Journey in Everyday Spirituality

Beginning this fall, Sparrow Soul Care is offering an intimate, small-group cohort walking through Kevin O’Brien’s well-loved book, The Ignatian Adventure.

Rooted in the timeless wisdom of St. Ignatius of Loyola, this journey is specifically designed for real life. You don’t need to leave your job, family, or commitments for a 30-day silent retreat. Instead, you will learn how to weave sacred reflection, imaginative prayer, and contemplative listening directly into your ordinary days.

What We Will Explore Together:

Your Unique Path: Discerning where God is inviting you to grow, rest, and move forward with renewed purpose.

The Foundations: Grounding yourself in God’s unconditional love and learning the rhythm of the Daily Examen.

Healing & Grace: Gently leaning into mercy, letting go of heavy burdens, and receiving profound healing.

The Life of Christ: Walking step-by-step through the stories, ministry, and heart of Jesus—from the humble quiet of Advent all the way to the joy of Eastertide.

Your Unique Path: Discerning where God is inviting you to grow, rest, and move forward with renewed purpose.

“The Spiritual Exercises are designed to help us clear away the clutter in our lives, discover our deepest desires, and fall more deeply in love with God.” — Kevin O’Brien, SJ

What’s Included in Your Journey

This cohort is intentionally kept small (capped at 6–8 participants) to ensure a safe, supportive, and deeply personal environment.

You can join an existing group, or gather your community group or a few of your besties to adventure together. The journey is always richer with a friend!

  • Six Group Gatherings: Meaningful, grounded conversations where we share insights, process our experiences, and support one another on the path.  You can choose between my two cohorts, one in-person that meets in my home in Sherwood, and one virtual cohort that is available to anyone regardless of location.
  • Monthly 1:1 Spiritual Direction: A dedicated one-hour individual session with me each month, offering a confidential, sacred space to tend specifically to your personal spiritual journey.
  • A Gentle Structure: A steady, pastoral rhythm from September through May that aligns naturally with the changing seasons of the year.
  • Ignatian Adventure Book: Your book will be provided at our first group session. I highly recommend a journal, so dust off that pretty journal that you’ve been saving or use this as permission to go get a new one.  Otherwise, all you need is your Bible.

Investment

$75 per month (Billed monthly over 8 months, September through April). Includes all group sessions, guided facilitation, and your monthly one-on-one spiritual direction meetings.

What is required of cohort members?

One of the greatest gifts of The Ignatian Adventure is that it is designed to fit into your actual, everyday life—you don’t need to clear your schedule or go on a silent retreat to experience deep transformation.

Because this is a 32-week journey from September through May, finding a sustainable, gentle rhythm is key. Here is what you can expect to invest in your soul care each week:

  • Daily Prayer & Reflection (15 to 30 minutes a day): Five days a week, you will spend a quiet quarter-hour or half-hour in prayer, reading a short prompt, engaging in imaginative scripture meditation, and practicing the Daily Examen.
  • Six Group Gatherings (90 minutes each): We will meet together (via Zoom/in-person) six times over 32 weeks.
  • Monthly 1:1 Spiritual Direction (55 minutes): Once a month, you and I will meet individually for a dedicated spiritual direction session. This is a sacred, unhurried space to tend specifically to what God is stirring in your heart, ask questions, and notice where grace is meeting you.

“What if I miss a day (or a week) of prayer? Will I fall behind?”

Life happens. Work gets chaotic, family needs flare up, exhaustion sets in, and despite your best intentions, a day—or even a week—slips by without opening your book or carving out quiet time for prayer.

If you are wondering if you’ll “fall behind” or ruin the rhythm, take a deep breath and hear this clearly: There is no failing here, and you can never fall behind.

Here is why you should still join, even if your life feels full or unpredictable:

  • Grace over Rigor: Ignatian spirituality is rooted in God’s immense grace, not religious performance. This journey is meant to be a life-giving sanctuary in your week, not another homework assignment or item to check off your to-do list. If you miss a few days, you haven’t broken the rule; you’ve simply lived a normal human week.
  • The Group is Your Anchor: On the weeks when your personal prayer life feels dry or distracted, your small-group cohort is there to carry the momentum. Hearing how others are experiencing the material often breathes fresh life right back into your own journey.
  • We Catch Up Together: We move at a sustainable, spacious pace and there is built-in margin. If you miss a section, you don’t need to frantically rush to catch up. You simply pick up right where you are, knowing that wherever you land is the exact right place for your soul.

You do not need a perfect record to experience deep transformation. You just need a willingness to show up as you are—imperfect, busy, and deeply loved.

Understanding the Path: The Ignatian Adventure vs. Ignatian Spiritual Exercises

You may have heard of the Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life—often called SEEL—or perhaps you’re familiar with the classic, intensive 30-day silent retreat designed by St. Ignatius.

Both journeys share the exact same spiritual DNA, drawing from the same movements, prayers, and transformative heart. But The Ignatian Adventure, written by Jesuit priest Kevin O’Brien, is uniquely tailored for modern life and accessibility.

Here is how The Ignatian Adventure compares to traditional SEEL programs:

  • Designed for the Independent Pilgrim, Guided in Community: Traditional SEEL programs often require intensive, multi-page weekly reading materials alongside individual direction. The Ignatian Adventure uses a single, beautifully written, highly accessible book as our roadmap. It translates centuries-old Ignatian spirituality into warm, contemporary language that meets you right where you are.
  • A Sustainable Daily Rhythm: While SEEL can sometimes feel academic or rigorous, The Ignatian Adventure prioritizes personal reflection and imaginative prayer over heavy theology. It helps you carve out just 15 to 30 minutes a day for prayer, making it deeply sustainable even if you are balancing a busy career, family, and daily responsibilities.
  • The Best of Both Worlds: In our Sparrow Soul Care cohort, you aren’t walking this path alone in a book club, nor are you entirely isolated. You get the shared wisdom and companionship of a small, intimate group meetings, paired with monthly 1:1 spiritual direction to tend specifically to what God is stirring in your unique heart.

Think of The Ignatian Adventure as a warm, expertly mapped-out trail. You still get to experience the profound, life-changing terrain of the traditional Spiritual Exercises, but you have a clear guide, a supportive group of fellow travelers, and a pace that honors your actual everyday life.

Is This Right for You?

  • Craving a deeper, more intimate prayer life but feeling stuck or unsure how to begin.
